WHAT OUR AREA HAS TO OFFER YOU
BEACHES AND COVES
Cala violina
Cala Violina is a splendid bay located between Follonica and Punta Ala, with crystal clear water and a white sandy beach surrounded by Mediterranean scrub as a backdrop. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a path of about 1.5 km from the car park and through the woods, or from a slightly longer path starting from the Puntone di Scarlino to enjoy the views of the sea during a simple and pleasant walk that leads to the beach.
Cala Martina
Cala Martina is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Maremma. Immersed in the Le Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve, it overlooks the Gulf of Follonica. In addition to being renowned for the charm of its waters, Cala Martina is linked to a historical fact: it was the place where, way back on 2 September 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi, persecuted by the pontifical guards, settled embarked to reach Portovenere on board a fishing boat. In memory of this event there is a bust dedicated to the Italian leader in the path that leads to the beach, created by the Grosseto artist Tolomeo Faccendi.
Cala Civette
Another wonderful view of the sea is offered by Cala Civette, in the area between Scarlino and Castiglione della Pescaia; a cove that turns out to be a true earthly paradise made up of crystal clear water and green Mediterranean scrub that makes the encounter with wild nature unforgettable.
Parco della sterpaia
The Sterpaia Coastal Park is an enchanted environment where you can wander into a forest of centenary oaks until you discover, beyond the dunes, the beauty of the sea. Just one glance is enough to get lost in the crystalline reflection of the water that washes a beach of light and fine sand bordered by a shady pine forest. The profile of this stretch of coast, between Piombino and Follonica, is a long coastline of about 8 km, shallow and slightly sloping towards the sea, dotted with various towers overlooking the horizon: Torre Mozza, Torre del Sale, Carbonifera, buildings dating back to different historical periods with functions of sighting, customs and health surveillance respectively, commercial port.
Mamai beach
The centuries-old pine forest which, reaching down to the sea, frames the Gulf of Follonica represents the landscape context in which the Mamai Beach bathing establishment is located (2 km away from the campsite). The fine, golden sand and crystalline sea of Scarlino welcome bathers who can rent umbrellas, deckchairs and sunbeds to place near the umbrella or near the gazebos distributed on the beach. Lido customers can also bring their little 4-legged friends with them: the Mamai Beach bathing establishment is in fact a dog-friendly facility.
Le Rocchette
Rocchette beach is located between Scarlino and Castiglione della Pescaia, and is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Maremma. The sand and the gently sloping seabed make it very suitable for children. There are bathing establishments, bars, restaurants by the sea and a lot of free beach. On the right end you will also find some rocks from which you can dive without too much difficulty. The water is very clear and the seabed is suitable for snorkelling. The beach is located in front of a centuries-old pine forest and on the north-west side it is sheltered by the small promontory dominated by the Forte delle Rocchette, an ancient watchtower built in the 12th century. and today private property.
FOOD AND WINE EXPERIENCES
Rocca frassinello
Visiting the Rocca di Frassinello winery means transcending the concept of a tasting tour to enter an artistic and historical dimension that offers itself in an all-round experience. The structure, designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano, is immersed in almost 90 hectares of splendid vineyards and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful signature wineries in the Maremma and Tuscany.
Petra
Sinuous, respectful and low-impact, like the entire path that leads from the bunch to the bottle, the Petra winery, designed by the architect Botta, is a majestic jewel in the heart of the authentic Maremma. At the center of the hill are the aging galleries and, beyond the space reserved for the Slavonian oak barrels, there is a long tunnel that penetrates deep and stops in front of a massive rock wall: an umbilical cord that links Petra to the Petra mater of the Colline Metallifere.
Terrazza Moris
The Moris Terrace is the new location of the Morisfarms Enoteca located in the heart of the farm. Outdoor seating on the large terrace allows guests to savor the sea breeze and enchanting views while tasting local wines and delicacies. Inside the wine shop guests can purchase wines and extra virgin olive oil of their own production and other local products.
La Pierotta
Located in the heart of the Upper Tuscan Maremma, a stone’s throw from Scarlino, the La Pierotta farm of the Rustici family is a beautiful winemaking reality with over 40 years of experience. The suggestive tasting room adjacent to the barrel cellar and the sales point, the splendid portico for summer tastings like a terrace overlooking the vineyards, make La Pierotta a complete company just as the range of wines offered is complete.
Le Mortelle
Fattoria Le Mortelle is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an extraordinary and fascinating position both for nature than for the history of the places that surround it. The family has worked on both the vineyards and the new cellar since 1999 with the belief that the area, still emerging in the Italian wine scene, is highly suited to the production of quality wines and that here the characteristics of the terroir and of the cultivated varieties. The farm extends over 270 hectares of which 170 are planted with vineyards.
BIKE AND FOOT ROUTES
PATH OF THE COVES
By bike or on foot it is possible to reach two very suggestive coves surrounded by nature. Starting from the campsite, the first three kilometers pass along the tourist port of Marina di Scarlino full of shops and restaurants. Afterwards you will enter the bush through the Portiglioni barrier.
The first one you will find is Cala Martina after 2 km of travel, it is enclosed between two headlands, Punta Francese to the north and Punta Martina to the south and is characterized by the presence of rocks and a very transparent sea. At Cala Martina on 2 September 1849, patriotic Maremmani helped Garibaldi, chased by the pontifical guards, to escape by boarding a fishing boat towards Porto Venere. The General greets the Maremmani with the cry “Long live Italy”. The event is remembered with a monument on the path leading to the beach, created in 1949 by the sculptor Tolomeo Faccendi and with a granite log placed in the sea.
After another 2 km you will arrive at Cala Violina, the cove is enclosed between the two headlands of Punta Martina to the north and Punta Le Canne to the south. The white sand that characterizes the beach has also given the cove its name, in reference to the sounds that it “emits” when it is trampled on by those who cross it, recalling the pleasant sound of a violin. This so-called “musical” sand is mainly composed of quartz granules which produce the characteristic sound when they are in movement and rubbed together. Musical sands are a very rare natural phenomenon found in very few parts of the world.
Parco naturale della maremma
Moving a little further south, for those who love walking, the Maremma Park offers 9 itineraries along which you can dive into its nature and history. To learn to read about the Mediterranean ecosystems, the result of a long coexistence between man and wild nature, or simply to do physical activity in the open air in an environment of great beauty. On the sea or a step away from the sea.
Padule di Scarlino
For nature lovers, a few steps from our campsite it is possible to visit the Scarlino Nature Reserve. The Scarlino Marshes are an important area natural where dozens of different species of birds stop and reproduce. It is a favorite destination for birdwatching lovers but also for those who want to immerse themselves in a landscape that is very reminiscent of what the Maremma must have been like until a few decades ago.
Parco Naturale di Montioni
Extending for approximately 7000 hectares between the Cornia and Pecora Valleys in an area between the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto, the Montioni Natural Park includes two state nature reserves: the Marsiliana (440 hectares) and Poggio Tre Cancelli (100 hectares) . These hills, covered by forests especially of holm oaks, constitute a vegetal landscape closely linked to human action, in particular to the production of charcoal and the cutting of the forest.
To get an overview of the history and nature that characterize the Montioni Park, in Val di Cornia, the recommended itinerary is the Poggio Saracino route.
The route retraces the traces of man-nature coexistence in history, starting from the town of Montioni Nuovo, the heart of the Park, built by the Princes of Piombino, Felice and Elisa Baciocchi, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte. The buildings from the Napoleonic era, the open-air mines and the access to the tunnels that develop underground, the ovens for cooking or confectioning of the aluminous stone and the material transport systems are still clearly visible today. Continuing along the path, through a thick thicket of evergreens in which the reddish trunks of cork oaks without their bark stand out here and there, you arrive at the panoramic point of Casa Saracino, from which you descend again, completing the ring. The view of the entrance to the ancient alum quarries is very evocative.
Riserva naturale le bandite di Scarlino
The Bandite Nature Reserve reaches almost 9000 hectares of fragrant and lush Mediterranean scrub. The territory of the protected area touches the municipalities of Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica, Gavorrano and Scarlino, including the area that reaches the hill – with Monte d’Alma – and the one that reaches the sea. Currently the reserve has a dense network of paths that allows you to explore it with complete respect for nature. These routes are much loved especially by those who ride MTBs, but they are pleasant to explore on foot and on horseback, enjoying spectacular views, especially once you reach the sea. On the Monte Muro Path, 5 km long, you will discover the ruins of the Monte Muro convent, a historic refuge with a tormented history, looted several times. Today the ruins are invaded by vegetation but allow you to perceive the original architecture. It can be reached on foot starting from Fosso Al Leccione, following the forest road.
Etruscan Necropolis Path of Poggio Tondo, 12 km long, includes several streets of the Bandite di Scarlino. The route starts from Scarlino castle, crosses a picturesque chestnut grove, and climbs towards Monte d’Alma. Continuing west you will arrive at the Etruscan necropolis of Poggio Tondo, an archaeological site immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, with tombs dating back to between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. and the remains of an Etruscan farm.
Parco delle Biancane
The Biancane Geopark is one of the most famous attractions of Monterotondo Marittimo. The name originates from the so-called “biancane”, i.e. white dome-shaped rocky reliefs. The naturalistic route proposed in the Biancane Geopark starts from the “Lagone Cerchiaio” and continues through areas where numerous natural geothermal manifestations. The Biancane Park is always open and free. It is possible to visit the park with the help of audio guides that can be rented at the Mubia Museum.

Da Piazza Bovio, la più grande piazza sul mare d’Europa su cui si affaccia Palazzo Appiani, lo sguardo abbraccia la costa e le isole dell’Arcipelago.
Scarlino
A few kilometers from the Camping, an imposing fortification dominates the Maremma countryside: La Rocca Aldobrandesca di Scarlino, better known as Rocca Pisana or Castello di Scarlino, the village of the same name on which it stands. The construction of the fortress dates back to the Middle Ages at the behest of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family for defensive purposes as a lookout tower, due to its elevated position from which the view could extend to the coast and the surrounding plains.
Museo Archeologico del Portus Scabris
A few steps from the Camping you can find the Archaeological Museum of Portus Scabris, it is housed in a hydraulic toll booth from the early 1900s and overlooks a protected area of international naturalistic importance, the Scarlino Marshes. The museum was established in 2009 to show the finds accumulated over the centuries on the seabed of the Puntone di Scarlino area and recovered during the underwater archaeological excavations conducted between 2000 and 2001. The museum constitutes in all respects an opportunity to immerse yourself in the territory’s past!
Follonica e Magma
It is one of the most renowned summer destinations in the Grosseto Maremma and Tuscany. The coast of Follonica is particularly appreciated for the sandy seabed which slopes slowly towards the sea. Over the last 18 years it has obtained the Blue Flag several times and in 2017 it received the 5 Sails from Legambiente, awards which constitute a guarantee of the quality of the sea waters and the services provided to visitors. Follonica is also a city rich in history, the MAGMA – Museum of Cast Iron Arts of the Maremma, based in the former steelworks complex, offers the opportunity to come into contact with the history of Follonica and its territory. The Montioni Natural Park instead offers the possibility of following historical itineraries to discover some of the most important places for the area during the Middle Ages.
Lago dell’Accesa
Did you know that less than 20 km away you can explore a lake very dear to the Etruscan civilisation? We are in the middle of the uncontaminated countryside and it is right here, where the Colline Metallifere slope towards the Maremma that you can explore a lake very dear to the Etruscans: Lago dell’Accesa. In fact, it was on the shores of Lake Accesa an Etruscan settlement was found which apparently dates back to the 7th-6th century. This settlement was made up of 5 living quarters and as many necropolises. It even seems that one of the neighborhoods was built on top of pre-existing buildings. The presence of the Etruscan people was so important for this place that since 2001 the entire area of Lake Accesa has become a theme park dedicated to the Etruscan civilisation. Perfect place to enjoy some sun and take a swim in the tranquility of the lake.
Gavorrano e Museo Minerario
Set among the green Colline Metallifere, the fascinating village embodies different eras: from medieval testimonies to industrial history, celebrating ancient architecture and rich mineral deposits.
The Mining Museum in the Gallery is a gateway to the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills National Park which has its headquarters here. It is a multimedia museum set up inside a real mining tunnel which originally served as a reserve for explosives. Through the museum itinerary the visitor retraces, thanks to the accompaniment of an obligatory specialized guide, all the phases and moments of the day of a miner of the Gavorrano pyrite mine (opened in 1898 and definitively closed in 1981). The presence of sounds, machinery and educational reconstructions allow an easy approach to subjects relating to mining technology, the national history of the twentieth century and the social history of the miners and their families. Strongly based on the narrative ability of the guides and very often of the miners themselves, the Mining Museum is an important point of reference in the area for introducing oneself into modern mining issues.
